CIMARRON COUNTY, THE MOST SCENIC PLACE IN OKLAHOMA
When people think of Cimarron County, opinions can vary widely. Devoid of trees, the eastern half of the country transitions in mesa country. The highest point in Oklahoma, Black Mesa, partially resides in Cimarron County.
The county holds several other distinctions. The first is that it touches 4 different states; Colorado, New Mexico, Texas and Kansas. A small portion of the county also rests in the mountain time zone.
WHAT TO SEE IN CIMARRON COUNTY
Cimarron County is home to several scenic and historic locations. Along with Black Mesa, there are several ranches that date back over a hundred years. Lake Etling is a small reservoir that is in the northwestern portion of the county, just a stone’s throw from the historic town of Kenton.
FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS
Cimarron County is a very scenic area to go to. Abandoned houses and barns, along with some old churches are scattered throughout the county. Out in mesa country, photographers can enjoy finding plenty of objects such as cactus or mesas for foreground objects.
The night skies though are becoming a big draw for photographers. The Oklahoma Panhandle boasts some great night skies for astrophotography. West of Boise City though, the skies go from great to OUTSTANDING!!!
Bortle Class 1 skies await photographers. I learned my astrophotography skills in Cimarron County. I have also led a couple of night sky workshops into the area. The skies present everyone from beginner to advanced a great palette to create great images.
If you are a photographer, you can read more about the Kenton area in this blog post that I wrote.

Boise City, the county seat, is the largest town in the county. Before heading west into mesa country, it is wise to top off the fuel tank. There are no gas stations in the Kenton area.
Clayton, New Mexico is the closest town to Kenton other than Boise City that has any services such as gas stations or lodging.
