Over the weekend of May 14th and 15th, I had the opportunity to travel to small Oklahoma Panhandle town of Goodwell to shoot the 2016 Deke Latham Memorial Bronc Riding School. Goodwell is home to Oklahoma Panhandle State University, which has one of the most formidable collegiate rodeo programs in the nation.
This was only the second time that I have had the chance to shoot this event. The last time was two years ago and I only was able to shoot for a couple of hours on Saturday. This year though, my schedule was open the entire weekend. Although I am very inexperienced in shooting rodeo, I was lucky enough a few years ago to learn about Matt Cohen, one, if not the best, rodeo photographer in the nation. Just by studying his work, reading some of the tips that he has written and listening to his podcast, I have been afforded a solid foundation to shoot rodeo.
